Kehlani

Oakland, California, USA ยท 2011 - present

Kehlani is one of those artists where the size of the fanbase and the depth of the critical conversation have never quite matched up, and that gap says something unflattering about how the music press prioritizes things. Her records have been commercially successful, consistently praised in passing, and then somehow underexamined. That is starting to change.

Born in Oakland, California, she grew up navigating genuinely difficult circumstances, including losing her father before she could know him, being raised partly by an aunt, and cycling through the kind of instability that derails a lot of people before they find footing. Music was the footing. She started performing young, made the rounds of the Bay Area scene, and earned an X Factor audition as part of a group called Poplyfe before eventually going solo.

The solo trajectory has been striking. Her mixtapes Cloud 19 and You Should Be Here found massive audiences online, the latter earning a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. She followed with the studio albums SweetSexySavage and It Was Good Until It Wasn’t, records that used R&B and neo-soul architecture to process grief, love, self-worth, and what it means to have people watching you do all of that in public.

Blue Water Road, released in 2022, is the record where she fully arrived. It is a sprawling, emotionally precise album that draws on gospel, soul, and bedroom pop without sounding like it is trying to hit multiple targets. It sounds like one artist with a very clear sense of what she needs music to do. The production gives her voice room, and she fills that room without overselling a single note.

What makes Kehlani interesting as an artist rather than just a commercial entity is how consistently her music engages with her actual life. She has been open about her sexuality, her mental health, her experiences as a mother, and the particular pressures of being a young Black woman in the public eye. None of this reads as brand management. It reads as someone who figured out that the only version of pop music worth making is the one that is completely honest about where it is coming from.

With a new album on the horizon in 2026, the conversation around her is finally catching up to the work. It was overdue.
