In 2023, a track that sounded like Drake and The Weeknd became a significant controversy. By 2025, AI-generated music is available through consumer apps, has been used in commercial advertising without disclosure, and is the subject of ongoing litigation that will likely determine significant legal precedents.
The questions this raises are not simple, and the discourse around them is often not helpful. The most reductive version presents AI music as either an existential threat to human artistry or a neutral tool no different from the synthesizer. Neither framing captures what is actually happening.
What is actually happening is that a technology has emerged that can produce outputs that are audibly similar to human musical performance and composition, that can be directed by people who do not have traditional musical training, and that can do so at negligible cost relative to hiring musicians. The economic implications of this for working musicians in categories like session work, production music, and soundtrack composition are significant and mostly negative.
The question of whether AI music constitutes art is philosophically interesting but practically secondary to the question of what happens to the livelihoods of working musicians who occupied specific economic niches in the industry. Those niches are already under pressure from streaming economics. AI adds another vector of pressure.
The legal framework has not caught up. Copyright law in most jurisdictions requires human authorship. Training data laws are being litigated. The outcomes will shape the economic landscape for music in ways that are difficult to predict but important to pay attention to.
