My Method Actor, released in 2024, is the record where Nilüfer Yanya stopped making rock albums that apologized for being rock albums. Everything before it was good. This one is decisive.
The London-based singer and guitarist has been building toward something like this since her 2019 debut Miss Universe, which introduced her as a writer of unusual precision who could make a three-minute song feel airtight and just slightly strange. On the 2022 follow-up PAINLESS, she was more confident with texture. My Method Actor is where the ambition and the execution land in the same place at the same time.
The title track sets the tone: a nervous guitar figure, a melody that arrives at angles, lyrics that circle around identity and performance without landing on an easy summary. Yanya has always written about selfhood with a particular kind of wariness, as if committing too hard to any single version of yourself is the most dangerous thing you can do. My Method Actor gives that anxiety a specific shape and lets it breathe.
Production-wise, the record leans into the distortion and dissonance that was always lurking in her earlier work. Nothing is cleaned up. The edges stay. That is the right call. An album this sharp would lose something if it were polished.
My Method Actor is one of the better guitar records of 2024. It knows exactly what it is trying to do, and it does it.
